An Expats Guide To UAE National Day

Whether you have just landed in the UAE or you are simply interested in learning more about the UAE National then you’re in the right place. To mark the 2016 UAE National Day (Yawm al watani) we felt it would be appropriate to provide you with some in-depth information about this glorious celebration.

On the 2nd of December across the United Arab Emirates each year the community joins and celebrates the UAE National Day.

National Day was formed as a celebration to mark the UAE’s Union Day between the 6 emirates, which welcomed the 7th emirate Ras Al khaima in 1972.

Unfortunately there is a misconception that the UAE National Day stands for the nationalisation of the British Protectorate Treaties in 1968 however this is not correct. National Day here in the UAE is dedicated to the unification of all 7 emirates in 1971, which was lead by the federations first president Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

To mark this event, the UAE residents and businesses hold celebrations across the emirates. Flags are draped across buildings, across roads and even on car roofs. It is a very proud day to be an emirate.

Many residents will wear dresses and outfits that contain the UAE national flag colours and decorate their homes inside and out to mark this occasion.
